The word “concierge” comes from the Old French for Comte des Cierges, translated as the “Keeper of the Candles.” This was the title of a servant in noble houses of France who was responsible for heating and lighting the residence. With time, Comte de Cierges undertook more and more responsibilities, being in charge of providing the comfortable way of life to French nobility; the name of the profession turned into concierge, the title that is known to date.
Concierge services first appeared in Europe and became more and more popular among the wealthy, and then among companies that sought to improve the quality of their services and optimize their costs. Major international banks, industrial enterprises, investment and insurance companies one after another began to employ professional concierges, thus raising their status and increasing the loyalty of their customers.
